What Is a Diamond?

By September 30, 2020No Comments

Every woman loves the idea of having a diamond on her finger or around her neck. Not only are diamonds beautiful, but they are also a solid investment and maintain their value forever. Even though we love them, however, how much do we actually know about them?

A diamond is a precious stone made purely of carbon. It is typically colorless and crystalline and is known to be the hardest stone in the world. Within a diamond, carbon atoms are arranged in various structural patterns called diamond lattice. These face-centered arrangements enable the stone to expand outward in all directions at the same rate as it grows.

Due to their purity and clarity, most diamonds are nearly colorless and have very few impurities. There are colored diamonds as well, and although they have more impurities in them, they are popular as a unique fashion statement.  Colors of diamonds vary from yellow and pink to blue, and they are graded based on their color shades.

The hardness of diamonds is unrivaled, and they can only be scratched by another diamond.  Because of their strength, they also make excellent abrasives and are commonly used for industrial activities and cutting other materials.

Diamonds are valued based on what are known as the Four C’s: clarity, color, cut, and carat. When buying diamonds, these four aspects are what affect the value and price of the stones. In order to stay within your budget, prioritize the Four C’s in their order of importance to you, so you can have a point of reference for what you are and are not willing to compromise on.
