How to Tell If a Diamond is Fake

Diamonds are beautiful to behold. Unfortunately, not all diamonds we see in the store are considered real. There are diamonds that are man-made or made in laboratories.

Though there may not be a significant difference when see both a fake diamond and a real diamond using our naked eye, it is important to distinguish the two if there’s a price involved. If we want a true value of what we pay for a diamond jewel, we want to ensure that we get a real diamond and not an imitation.

So, how do we spot a fake diamond? Here are some helpful tips:

  • Check the label of the diamond jewels. Some stores label their diamonds with real diamonds, man-made diamonds or laboratory-cultured diamonds. Keep a close watch on these labels to see if you are buying artificial ones.
  • Ask the brand of the diamond. Fortunately, laboratories require stores to display their brand names with the jewels so they can be identified. If they have brand names of laboratories such as Sona, Takara and Gemesis, then these diamonds are made in the laboratories.
  • Check the quality of the setting. See if your diamond is placed in an intricate and high quality setting. Natural diamonds must be placed be a high quality setting given their value. These must be properly secured and placed.
  • See if there are damages. Diamonds are the hardest stone hence it is rarely damaged due to its strength. Check if there are scratches or scuffs in your diamond.
  • Put it in a test. There are certain tests that you can try yourself to see if what you are holding is a real diamond or not. For instance, if you breathe in the diamond and the fog instantly disappears, it is a real diamond. Otherwise, the fog will stay for more than 2 seconds.
